United States Continues to Support Cambodia’s Labor Initiatives

PHNOM PENH: Minister of Labor Heng Sour met with US Ambassador W. Patrick Murphy to strengthen partnerships in the fields of employment, social security and vocational training to improve work environments and increase productivity to maintain national economic growth.

During the meeting on October 25, the Minister of Labor thanked the United States for its past assistance in labor-related issues. He then informed the US Ambassador of the commitment his ministry, along with the government led by Prime Minister Hun Manet, has to improving working conditions and harmonizing industrial relations where employers and workers can maintain their interests by strengthening their capacity and knowledge related to labor law.

He highlighted some of the other priority programs that the Royal Government has set including free vocational training for 1.5 million poor and vulnerable families and providing additional allowances. He said that this national program will help people in difficult situations to have specific skills in a short time and get a wide range of job opportunities with market recognition.

The Minister of Labor added that the government also plans to provide a social security system for health care for workers through voluntary contribution of 15,600 Riels (about $3.75) per month, to reduce costs and increase savings for workers.

The US Ambassador praised the Ministry's policies and vision to strengthen employment, social security and vocational training.
